Hispanic Caribbean Christmas Caroling ("Las Parrandas")

On December 23rd the International Academy and Law & Public Service Academy, in conjunction with the World Language department, proudly present “Las Parrandas,” a live interpretation of Hispanic Caribbean Christmas Carols.

Every Christmas, particularly in the Puerto Rican countryside, folk bands visit house by house playing the typical rhythms of Bomba and Plena, a blend of African rhythms and dance sung in Spanish. In recognition of the African Caribbean presence within the school and local community, we honor the traditions of our heritage and strive to keep them alive and offer others the opportunity to experience them firsthand.

Under the guidance of Mr. Karell, students will participate in the hands-on interactive sing-along. Students will have the opportunity to briefly play one or more of the following instruments, typical of the folkloric celebrations held each year: Plenera, Guiro, Maraca, Campana, and Clave, accompanied by Guitar.
